NCAR|UCAR expertise includes researchers at the cutting edge of weather, water, and climate science, including:

• atmospheric chemistry and air quality
• climate
• computational science, computer modeling, supercomputing, and data assimilation
• Sun-Earth interactions, solar storms and space weather
• weather science to unravel remaining mysteries and expand forecast capabilities
  
  

Additional scientists, engineers, and technical staff are developing ways to apply our knowledge to problems of major significance to society, such as

• weather hazards to transportation—including detection and warning systems for turbulence, icing, and other flight hazards and for weather-related hazards of road and rail travel
• weather decision support systems for new and emerging economic sectors—including renewable energy, wildfire prediction, precision agriculture, and other needs
• health and disease issues affected by weather or climate, connecting forecasts to more effective warnings, and other topics important to safety, quality of life, and national security
  
  

We also develop, maintain, and provide to our community a fleet of research aircraft, mobile radar, satellite instruments and data systems, and increasingly miniaturized sensors that capture data from around the globe. 

Our educators specialize in translating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) into resources for students, teachers, and lifelong learners.

About NCAR & UCAR

NCAR is a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the National Science Foundation and devoted to service, research and education in the atmospheric and related sciences. Significant additional support is provided by other U.S. government agencies, other national governments, and the private sector. NCAR is managed by the nonprofit University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, a consortium of more than 100 universities granting degrees in atmospheric and related science. UCAR provides additional resources through the UCAR Community Programs.
