14 December 2009  •  The Earth System Modeling Framework, housed at NCAR since 2002, moved to a new organizational home on 2 November. ESMF is now housed in NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory and the NOAA/University of Colorado Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences. Funded by NASA, NCAR, and the U.S. Department of Defense, ESMF is designed to increase the portability and interoperability of weather and climate models through the use of model components and supporting applications.

The FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC program held its fourth annual data users workshop on 27-29 October in Boulder. Each day the satellites that make up COSMIC (Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate) collect between 1,000 and 2,500 atmospheric and electron density profiles. NCAR director Eric Barron has accepted the position of president at Florida State University. "While it is difficult to leave NCAR, I am extremely gratified and honored to return to my alma mater and serve as its next president," he says.
