A research cruise in 2005 yielded the Antarctic Peninsula's highest-resolution sediment core for the Holocene epoch. The 108-meter (354-foot) core spans almost 15,000 years of climate. A gradual cooling is evident from 5,900 to 2600 years ago, but the core shows no evidence of major glacier advance during the early Holocene or the Little Ice Age. The current warming and associated glacial response in the northern Antarctic Peninsula appear to be unprecedented in their synchrony and impact.
