The following statement is from Antonio Busalacchi, president of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). UCAR is a consortium of more than 120 universities, including the University of Arizona, which manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) on behalf of the National Science Foundation.
On behalf of UCAR, I want to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Thomas Meixner. We were shocked to learn that he was tragically killed yesterday at the University of Arizona (UA), where he was the head of the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences.
Dr. Meixner, whose research interests included hydrology of the desert Southwest, was a valued member of the Earth system science community and an inspiration to countless students. He also served as a UCAR member representative from UA, one of UCAR’s founding universities.
Dr. Meixner’s death is a senseless tragedy. We deeply mourn his passing, and this loss will be profoundly felt at next week’s UCAR Members Meeting in Boulder, which he was planning to attend. Our thoughts are with all those who knew and loved him.
