The following statement is from Antonio Busalacchi, president of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). UCAR is a consortium of 129 universities, including Brown University, and manages the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR) on behalf of the NSF.
Last weekend was difficult as we watched another act of horrific violence at one of our UCAR Member Institutions. On Saturday, a gunman killed two students and injured nine others in a classroom at Brown University. On behalf of UCAR, I want to express our sincere condolences to the loved ones of these students and offer our support to the entire Brown community.
We know only too well in Boulder how mass violence can shatter a sense of community safety, but we also recognize how coming together and supporting one another can see us through to the other side. As our community gathers this week at the American Geophysical Union (AGU), my hope is that UCAR is able to offer some comfort to our colleagues from Brown and throughout the university community as we all wrestle with the anger, sadness, and helplessness that these events can cause.
