March 31, 2015 | Acclaimed polar ice expert and PBS host Richard Alley will give UCAR's next Walter Orr Roberts Distinguished Lecture on Wednesday, April 8, from 3:00 to 3:50 p.m. in the University of Colorado’s Macky Auditorium. Alley's talk, entitled “Ways Forward on Climate and Energy: Getting Good from What We Do and Don’t Know,” is part of the 2015 Conference on World Affairs.

An Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences in Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, Alley's research interests focus on glaciology,sea level change, and abrupt climate change. He is widely credited with showing that Earth has experienced abrupt climate change in the past – and likely will again, based on his study of ice cores from Greenland and West Antarctica.

The recipient of numerous teaching and research awards, Alley is known for using creative parodies of country music tunes to teach and engage his students. He is also an author of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment reports. The IPCC shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Vice President Al Gore. 

The lecture series honors the memory of Walter Orr Roberts, the first president of UCAR and first director of NCAR.

Alley's talk, as well as the entire conference, is free and open to the public. Be sure to arrive early to assure good seating. The event will also be streamed live online.
