One of NCAR’s first staff members, Knight died on 26 June after a short illness. During a research career that extended from the 1960s to the 2000s, Knight focused on the characteristics of frozen precipitation, including hailstones and ice crystals.
NCAR suffered another loss with the sudden death in May of Tom Warner (below left), science manager for NCAR’s National Security Applications Program. With a wide range of expertise in modeling and regional meteorology, Warner authored two textbooks used by universities around the world: Numerical Weather and Climate Prediction and Desert Meteorology.
And in early August, UCP/JOSS director Gene Martin (below right) died after a brief illness. Martin was well known to scientists and technicians across the UCAR community, traveling around the world in support of community workshops and laying the groundwork for field campaigns months or years before the first pieces of data were collected. Sawyer is serving as interim UCP director.
