The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) congratulates Senators Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) and Gary Peters (D-Mich.) for winning the 2018 American Geophysical Union (AGU) Presidential Citation for Science and Society.
In awarding the Presidential Citation, the AGU cited the bipartisan efforts by Gardner and Peters to pass the American Innovation and Competitiveness Act of 2017. The legislation strengthens the nation’s STEM education pipeline, increases the number of women and underrepresented minorities within STEM fields, and sets robust authorization levels for the National Science Foundation, while avoiding congressional interference in the allocation to NSF’s directorates, including Geosciences.
The AGU also noted additional work by Gardner and Peters on science policy measures, including co-sponsoring the Space Weather and Forecasting Act, which aims to increase federal scientific research and data collection about space weather events.
"Senators Gardner and Peters are to be congratulated for winning the AGU Presidential Citation," said UCAR President Antonio Busalacchi. "They have provided exemplary leadership and support for major aspects of Earth system science and helped to maintain funding levels for research that is essential for the nation's long-term economic and national security.”
AGU established the Presidential Citations in 2012 to recognize leaders whose work has helped advance Earth and space science and increase the understanding and appreciation of its value to society.
