Intersecting Climate Change and Art

Local artists featured in exhibit at NSF NCAR Mesa Lab

A new art exhibit, Exploring Climate Change Through Art, will debut at the Mesa Laboratory on the campus of the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR) during a reception on Friday, May 17th. The juried show is a collaboration between Friends of the National Center, Museum of Boulder, and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) Center for Science Education.

“Often people think of art and science as being opposites and this show is an opportunity to blend the two into something inspiring and special. There is something about seeing data represented visually that viscerally captures you in a way that just talking about climate science can’t,” said Emma Byers, Friends of the National Center Development Manager.

The exhibit features 39 pieces of art from 32 local artists that were selected by a jury composed of scientists and artists. The art explores a range of emotions captured in diverse mediums such as quilts, photography, pastels and more. All the pieces will be displayed in the Mesa Lab Café for the next four months.

The reception on May 17 will feature light refreshments and tours of the NSF NCAR Mesa Lab. Space is limited, so community members wishing to attend the reception should RSVP at the event website. Beyond the opening reception, the exhibit can be viewed by the public anytime the Mesa Lab is open until September 20, 2024.
