Free public event, October 27

BOULDER—Learn about wild weather during this year’s Super Science Saturday at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). This free, family-friendly event will be held on Saturday, October 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at NCAR’s Mesa Lab at 1850 Table Mesa Drive in south Boulder. Students, parents, and teachers are invited to enjoy hands-on science and Halloween fun, activities, workshops, and presentations.

Just opened, NCAR’s new Weather Gallery Exhibit is a great way to learn about tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, how we observe and forecast the weather, and variations in climate over time and space.

The new exhibit is focused on hands-on learning says Laura Allen, an education and outreach specialist with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), which manages NCAR. Visitors can run their hands through a simulated cloud, change the wind flowing over miniature mountains, and try other new experiences. “We have several touch-screen games," says Allen, "including one where you can compare cloud photos and descriptions to what you're seeing through our windows."

Previous Super Science Saturday favorites will also be back for more fun this year. The NCAR Wizards will perform four shows throughout the day, along with CU’s Little Shop of Physics, which will showcase over 50 interactive activities. There will also be weather balloon launches and dropsonde demos. And the storm-chasing Doppler on Wheels truck from the Center for Severe Weather Research will also be on display.
