NSF NCAR C-130 flying low over the New York City area starting today

Research aircraft will collect air quality data through August 31

NEW YORK, NY – From July 16 through August 31, a C-130 research aircraft will periodically fly over the tri-state area to collect data about air quality. These flights are part of a research campaign called the Greater New York Oxidant Trace Gas Halogen and Aerosol Airborne Mission (GOTHAAM).

During the six-week campaign, researchers will sample the air above the tri-state area to learn more about how summer air quality in an urban environment varies over a 24-hour time period. The instruments onboard the plane are purely for observations. Data collected from GOTHAAM will help air quality agencies in the region and other megacities better understand harmful pollution.

GOTHAAM is led by researchers at Stony Brook University, supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR), and funded by the National Science Foundation.
